Security Update 2007-009 1.1

Didja notice that “1.1” at the end?  I guess I’m glad I procrastinated on this one.  There appears to have been some problems with update 1.0, so 1.1 it is!

You can find it here for Tiger.

Internet Explorer from your Mac

December 21, 2007 Leave a comment

Ever since I bought my MacBook Pro, I’ve had this unexplainable aversion to installing and using X11. I’m not sure why that is. Maybe it has to do with it not being “pure Mac”. Don’t know.

Anyway, lately I’ve been coming across apps that I think I’d really like to have on my system. One would be the GIMP. I haven’t installed it up til now because it requires X11. Another is Open Office, but I found a port that actually doesn’t need X11. Both of these I’ll write about in future posts as I get them installed.

The other day I came across an article that showed me how to install the Windows version of Internet Explorer — several versions, actually — using X11 and Darwine. So, here’s how…

First, you need to install X11. Since I have Tiger (yes, still :P) I used the instructions found here. Well, that part was easy. (I’m doing this in real-time in case you didn’t know, so hopefully things will go smoothly…)

Next, go to this site and follow the instructions. I’ll do it now. Results in just a few minutes.

Okay, it’s been a little more than a few minutes. More like a day has gone by. But anyway…

It doesn’t look like I can use this IE for what I want. Basically, what I was looking for was a way to run Outlook Web Access on Windows IE because it behaves very much like the Outlook app itself with context menus (using right-click), folders, email groups, etc.  I have it running under Parallels, but it would be much cheaper, time and memory wise, to run ies4osx. However, running Outlook Web Access on ies4osx has two problems. First, I couldn’t get it to recognize right-click within the Inbox window. That’s a problem. Even that isn’t a killer because I could do all those functions using other keystrokes or via menu options, but still… The second problem is the killer. It’s that if you try to write an email, you can’t! It opens a window with the header, but the text area doesn’t work. It’s probably some kind of control, and if I look long enough for it, I might be able to install and activate it, but it’s too much trouble at this point. A project for another day I guess .

If any of you have ies4osx installed and working with Outlook Web Access, please let me know!

Java updated to Release 6 for OS X 10.4. I’m a little confused…

December 16, 2007 Leave a comment

The download page for Release 6 says that it updates ” J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_13″.  However, my understanding is that Sun already has a version of Java called Version 6 (1.6).  Therefore, Apple’s Release 6 (based on 1.5) is not the same as Java’s Version 6 (1.6).  Is this correct?

I guess I’ll update it anyway since I need to, but it sure is a little confusing…
